The Original Manhunter
Paul Kirk died for the first time while on a hunting trip in Africa
(1946). He was revived by the Council, whom he eventually came to oppose.
He sacrificed his life to destroy the Council in Detective Comics #443.
Two of his clones have taken the name Manhunter as well. One served as a
double agent in the Secret Society of Super-Villains (Manhunter
IV). And his last remaining clone is active today with the Power
Company under the name of Kirk DePaul (VI).
Between the time of
the two clones, both Mark Shaw (III) and Chase Lawler (V) have
also used the name. He was involved for a time with the Tigress,
before her turn to crime.
Notes
A previous
strip, "Paul Kirk, Manhunter," ran in Adventure Comics #58-72.
In it,
Kirk did not call himself "manhunter," that was merely his occupation. This
plainclothes character bore little resemblance to the costumed Simon and
Kirby character who debuted in #73. Simon and Kirby gave a similar makeover
to the Sandman. Read more about it
in an article
at Comic Book Resources. Quality Comics had their own Manhunter, who debuted just before DC's.
