"And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,
And say, Thus saith the Lord God ; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal

—Ezekiel 38: 1-3

The histories of Gog and Magog in the DC Universe are layered and confusing. Distinct Gogs and Magogs exist on both Earths-0 and -22, but their histories are for the most part contained to each of their relative universes. ยป SEE ALSO: Gog and Magog of Earth-0

On Earth-22, Magog preceded Gog. His origins are uncertain, but this metahuman became a notorious vigilante. His defining act was to kill the Joker, who stood trial for the death of Lois Lane and others from the Daily Planet. The public lauded Magog's decision and he was acquitted of the crime. This sparked a schism among metahumans that led Superman into retirement.

Magog's reckless ways also bought Superman out of retirement. When Magog and a group of other metas tore open Captain Atom's shell, most of Kansas was destroyed. (Kingdom Come #1) Magog survived conflagration and was soon hunted by Superman and the Justice League. They could not resolve their ideological differences but Superman and Magog were evenly matched. But Magog still had a hero's heart, and he was overcome with grief for the deaths in Kansas. (#2) He submitted to them and was imprisoned in the Justice League's new Gulag. (#3) When war erupted between the Justice League and the villains in the Gulag, Magog was among the survivors of another nuclear blast. Afterwards, he showed signs that he'd changed and might serve as a mentor to younger heroes. (#4)

Gog of Earth-22

Gog arrives at the hour of the Super-son's birth. From The Kingdom #1 (1999); art by Ariel Olivetti.

In the aftermath of the destruction of Kansas, Superman saved the life of a boy named William Matthews. William went on to found a church based around Superman. After Superman came out of retirement, in 2040, he visited the adult William and asked him to stop preaching in his name. William's faith was shaken, especially when he learned that Superman had actually failed that day to prevent Kansas' destruction.

William's world crumbled and as fate would have it, he was chosen at that moment by the universe's most powerful beings, the Quintessence, to be their champion. The powers destabilized William's already fragile mental state and he took the name Gog. William could now move through time, and across the boundaries of the multiverse. In madness, he killed Superman and began moving back through time to kill him again and again. (New Year's Evil: Gog #1)

Gog's ultimate goal was to accelerate the destruction of Kansas. His reasoning was that doing so would shake the world's faith in its heroes and lead to an earlier downfall. For various reasons, the members of the Quintessence would also benefit from the Kansas tragedy happening sooner. But when Gog arrived in 2031, he found the Justice League standing watch over Superman.(because his son was being born). Gog kidnapped the infant Jonathan Kent and continued to move backwards in time. Despite warnings from Waverider, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman pursued Gog him with the help of Rip Hunter. (The Kingdom #1)

As Gog moved backwards in time, he also moved across the boundaries of the multiverse, to Earth-0. The younger Justice Leaguers found him on the verge of recreating Magog's disaster. Gog had kidnapped Captain Atom and was set to initiate the massive blast. The elder heroes from Earth-22 soon arrived and the six of them struggled to bring him down. Finally, a blast from Gog's own staff ripped a hole in the fabric of space/time, and Gog was so awed by it that he relented. The Quintessence stepped in to claim their avatar and the Phantom Stranger charged them with repairing the psyche of William Matthews. (The Kingdom #2)

Powers

Gog and Magog possess powers on par, and perhaps in excess of, Superman. They are capable of surviving nuclear blasts, and possess super-strength and invulnerability. Both weild staffs that emit an energy that can singe Superman's skin.

Gog was empowered by the Quintessence and was imparted cosmic knowledge from those beings (Highfather, Ganthet, Shazam, and Zeus). He could travel unaided through time.
