Flashpoint

Cal Ellis is from Vathlo Island, which is another bit of Earth-One ephemera. As far as I know, Vathlo Island was first mentioned on a frequently reprinted map of Krypton from the early '70s (the earliest place I've seen it is in the Amazing World of Superman tabloid from 1973, which has a big pinup version, but the Grand Comics Database says the map originated in Superman #239, one of the giant reprint issues). I don't think DC ever did much with it pre-Crisis other than maybe a few panels in the "World of Krypton" or Krypton Chronicles stories, but, like Nubia, it was one of the comics industry's token efforts at diversity. I'm actually quite surprised that it took this long for DC to do something with Nubia -- after her original appearance, I think she popped up once or twice more and then was quietly swept under the rug....
